What is the BalanceBelt?

BalanceBelt, a wearable that uses haptic feedback to help patients suffering from severe Bilateral Vestibular Loss, find their balance and regain their independence.

The BalanceBelt is a slim, discrete, lightweight belt that gives people who suffer from Severe Vestibular Loss, feedback on their balance and allows them to recover their independence and mobility.

With the help of the BalanceBelt, patients can move around freely without assistance from others or without standard mobility aids.

The BalanceBelt is a slim, discrete, lightweight belt that gives people who suffer from Severe Vestibular Loss, feedback on their balance and allows them to recover their independence and mobility.

With the help of the BalanceBelt, patients can move around freely without assistance from others or without standard mobility aids.

BalanceBelt is a vibrotactile sensory substitution system for patients with severe vestibular loss. 

The BalanceBelt measures the accelerations and tilt of the upper trunk and via a microprocessor, activates 10 tactors, which are equally distributed around the patient’s waist to provide another point of reference regarding balance. A substantial tilt in any direction will activate the tactors so the patient will feel if he or she is tilted too much in a specific direction.

Existing treatment options are either ineffective, inconvenient for long time use, invasive or unsuitable for patients whose balance organs are completely non-functional.

The concept of the BalanceBelt was invented by Prof. Dr Kingma of Maastricht University. The process from idea which led to a commercial product, has taken more than 15 years of clinical research and product development.

Research revealed that existing Severe Vestibular Loss treatment options are either invasive or inconvenient for long-term use. Other options are unsuitable for patients, whose balance organs are completely non-functional.

Prof. dr. Kingma discovered that haptic feedback, vibrational feedback applied to the body, can help balance disorder patients find their balance. As a result, the Maastricht University Medical Center+ developed the first version of the BalanceBelt, which proved its effectiveness in patient trials.

As the belt needed to be custom made for each patient, it was still very expensive. Moreover, it was uncomfortable to wear for longer periods of time due to the weight and design of the belt.

Prof. Herman Kingma and Maastricht University Medical Center+ involved Elitac Wearables as partner with expertise in haptic feedback, usability and the production at scale of wearable electronics.

 

Through collaboration with the MUMC+ and Prof. dr. Kingma, Elitac Wearables’ multidisciplinary R&D team optimized the BalanceBelt design. The result is a lightweight, comfortable, practical and cost-effective product that will be available.
